How are coupons handled?

I read this article today on Southern Savers and just wanted to outline a portion of the post about how coupons are handled...

The store does not have to submit any information about what you purchased with the coupon. Therefore if you use a Prego coupon on Pepperidge Farm Toast (because the cashier told you too) the manufacturer will only care/notice if Publix submitted more Prego coupons than the amount of Prego they purchased. Since Publix purchases thousands of jars of Prego per year the odds they would have more coupons than product are pretty slim.

I would REALLY recommend read the FULL post, she has some great information!!

So does this mean cashiers should be less rude when you try to use coupons for what they are really for? I come across exasperated cashiers every time I shop- especially at Walmart and Target.

Yes that is what it means...but we all know they are still rude regardless, unfortunately!

I think we should all print this article and carry it around in our coupon binders...haha. Good information. Just because we (and by we I don't mean ME) do our homework & try to get the best deals we can, doesn't mean we are dishonest....but....we still have to do our part to be 'coupon' honest.

I posted about Jenny's article on my blog today too and linked her. It is full of great info for newbies and veterans alike !

I have always found being polite, calling whoever is serving you by name but being firm with cashiers and managers is the best ammo.I always check with the customer service desk or a manager BEFORE I shop so I don't have a confrontation or snafoo at checkout. Then if the answer is contrary to Coupon Policy, I whip out my binder and then if the answer is still no, I leave the store !
